June 17th - Physiology, Physics & Presentations

Final day of activities for SAST students
- Dropped off USB drives with presentations so their posters could be printed.
- Final communications workshop with Dr. Messmer. Peer reviewing of drafts and discussion activities.
- Physiology demo with Dr. Renata Ramos. Students looked at heart rates and reflexes using sensors and software.
- LOTS of physics demos by Dr. Barry Dunning. Examples of physics concepts covered in freshman physics by way of some great demos.
- Farewell dinner and Poster presentations.

June 11th - Circuits, Hypothesis & Chromatography

- Students started at the engineering kitchen, OEDK, with Dr. Oden. The students made a phone using circuits and were helped along by Matt, Carlos and Michael.
- After lunch, students did a hands on activity for formulating and testing hypotheses. Based on the picture they had quite a bit of fun (a little warning, there are quite a few pics today)
- Students performed two chromatography experiments which were explained by Dr. Amy Vollmer from Swarthmore College.
- Afterwards, students went to their individual labs to work on their research. They will be presenting their results in a poster session next Thursday.
- The day ended with a pool party provided by IBB at the Rice Rec. Center pool. Lots of thanks to IBB for this treat!

June 10th - Group Picture, Endophytes & Poster

- Students started off the day by taking their group photo for this year's program
- Students had a quick look at the ceiling at Duncan Hall. Something about the nothing and the un-nothing coming to form everything (or something like that)
- Students went to the biological building to discuss endophytes. The presentation was provided by Jeff and Jennifer. Darren also shared his undergraduate work.
- During lunch, the students were able to have a sit down talk with their mentors. Students enjoyed this quite a bit.
- Students walked over to the BRC for a presentation by Dr. Kalovidouris. She showed them different ways to set up their scientific poster and some key elements that should be included.
- Last thing on the agenda... Go meet their mentors and work in the lab :-)
